Peer reviewing at Contrastive Linguistics

Any paper submitted to the journal Contrastive Linguistics is initially reviewed by the Editor-in-chief or an assigned member of the editorial board who checks that the paper is appropriate for the journal and is sufficiently original and interesting. If the paper is deemed below par, it may be rejected without being reviewed any further.

Then the responsible editor assesses the paper’s composition and arrangement against the journal’s Author Guidelines to make sure it includes the required sections and conforms to the style sheet.

In case the paper conforms to the requirements, the Editor-in-chief or an assigned member of the editorial board sends invitations to individuals he or she believes would be appropriate reviewers (at least two). The reviewers who accept the invitation compose a detailed point-by-point review on the basis of a review card. The review is submitted to the journal, with a recommendation to accept or reject the paper, with the following option on acceptance – accept as it is or request revision (usually flagged as either major or minor).

The assigned member of the editorial board considers all the returned reviews before making an overall decision. If the reviews differ widely, the editor may invite an additional reviewer so as to get an extra opinion before making a decision.

The assigned member of the editorial board sends a decision email to the author including all relevant anonymous reviewers’ comments.

Prosodic Encoding of Phrasal Prominence and Information Structure in a Second Language: When Bulgarian and German Prosody meet

Bistra Andreeva

Saarland University

This research describes the production of prosodic cues to mark information structure in Bulgarian and German. It compares speech by native (L1) and second language (L2) speakers and investigates prosodic transfer from the L1 to the L2. The results confirm that Bulgarian and German natives use different prosodic cues to mark information status. Comparison of Bulgarian L1 and L2 data reveals that these prosodic differences lead to transfer from the L1 to the L2. To some degree, pitch accents used to mark focus appear to be transferred from the L2 to the L1 as well.

Keywords: prominence, information structure, interference, L2, Bulgarian accented German, German.

Previous years

Over the past thirty years Contrastive Linguistics featured works by outstanding scholars from Bulgaria and a number of other countries. To this day many foreign colleagues insist that their article or review be published in this journal and no linguisticsother. It was in Contrastive Linguistics that many young Ph.D. students, budding lecturers and researchers saw their first scholarly articles published.
On many occasions the journal has received high praise coming from world famous experts in the field. We shall quote just two typically congratulatory comments:

“Congratulations for this excellent journal, arguably the best journal of contrastive linguistics ever!”
Eugenio Coseriu [for many years member of the Advisory Board of the journal]

“I wish your journal future fruitful work so that it maintains the high prestige it enjoys in academic circles for many years to come.”
Tamara Repina [a distinguished Romance languages scholar]

We express our deepest gratitude to all our authors, past and present, to editors, reviewers, translators, proof-readers, technical assistants, to the management of the two philological faculties of Sofia University, to a long line of Rectors of the university and their staff, to the management, staff and friends from St. Kliment Ohridski University Press, - all of whom have made possible the existence of Contrastive Linguistics and have contributed to its high standing extending back over more than thirty years.

Thirty years is a venerable age for a periodical. Let us hope that there are many more fruitful years of creative work ahead!
