The paper focuses on the information, persuasion and manipulation components of commercial print advertisements. The persuasion and manipulation components are approached from a cognitive, social and linguistic perspective with a greater emphasis on the first. A semiotic and a visual-semiotic approach are used in the analysis of visually and verbally conveyed information in the analyzed advertisements. A discourse analytic and pragmatic approaches are applied to the verbally conveyed information. The complementarity between visual and verbal communication in print advertisements is also discussed.

Prosodic Encoding of Phrasal Prominence and Information Structure in a Second Language: When Bulgarian and German Prosody meet

Bistra Andreeva

Saarland University

This research describes the production of prosodic cues to mark information structure in Bulgarian and German. It compares speech by native (L1) and second language (L2) speakers and investigates prosodic transfer from the L1 to the L2. The results confirm that Bulgarian and German natives use different prosodic cues to mark information status. Comparison of Bulgarian L1 and L2 data reveals that these prosodic differences lead to transfer from the L1 to the L2. To some degree, pitch accents used to mark focus appear to be transferred from the L2 to the L1 as well.

SIMULATION AND GENDER. MOTOR SIMULATION

AND PRONOUNS: DOES THE PARTICIPANT'S GENDER MATTER?

Armina Janyan, New Bulgarian University

Two experiments were conducted aimed at studying possible gender differences in action simulation. The assumption behind the experiments was that mental simulation of actions and events is closely connected with the understanding of these actions and events. We asked the question whether the gender of a participant would modulate the degree of action simulation. Overall, the results of the two experiments suggested that firstly, gender differences are liable to task demands and task focus, and secondly, that the behaviour of men and women is different and may be subject to different mechanisms depending on gender congruency with the observed actor.

Key words: embodied cognition; gender; perspective taking; action simulation

Previous years

Over the past thirty years Contrastive Linguistics featured works by outstanding scholars from Bulgaria and a number of other countries. To this day many foreign colleagues insist that their article or review be published in this journal and no linguisticsother. It was in Contrastive Linguistics that many young Ph.D. students, budding lecturers and researchers saw their first scholarly articles published.
On many occasions the journal has received high praise coming from world famous experts in the field. We shall quote just two typically congratulatory comments:

“Congratulations for this excellent journal, arguably the best journal of contrastive linguistics ever!”
Eugenio Coseriu [for many years member of the Advisory Board of the journal]

“I wish your journal future fruitful work so that it maintains the high prestige it enjoys in academic circles for many years to come.”
Tamara Repina [a distinguished Romance languages scholar]

We express our deepest gratitude to all our authors, past and present, to editors, reviewers, translators, proof-readers, technical assistants, to the management of the two philological faculties of Sofia University, to a long line of Rectors of the university and their staff, to the management, staff and friends from St. Kliment Ohridski University Press, - all of whom have made possible the existence of Contrastive Linguistics and have contributed to its high standing extending back over more than thirty years.

Thirty years is a venerable age for a periodical. Let us hope that there are many more fruitful years of creative work ahead!

Statistical universals of definite articles

Ivan A. Derzhanski

Institute of Mathematics and Informatics
Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

The paper presents a search for statistical universals concerning definite articles. The study is based on information on 500 languages taken from the World Atlas of Language Structures (WALS) and other resources. The chi-squared test of independence is used to identify morphological, syntactic and other features which correlate with the presence of a definite article. These correlations are then checked for validity across the six macroareas of WALS. Some parallels of the discovered associations to known universals are drawn.

Keywords: chi-squared test, definite article, definiteness, morphosyntax, typology, universals.
